"JOEL SIEGEL: Alright. So, like I said, we're going to talk about some vocabulary today. We want to get, basically, the concepts of your beat and how that matches up with what you're actually playing on the kit. Vocabulary is important because it helps to organize these things, these concepts in your own mind. It also helps to communicate to both your teachers, if you end up taking lessons or if you're in band or whatnot. It also helps to communicate, most importantly, with your comrades. You're in a band and you're in rehearsal. You're trying to get stuff done. You're trying to make the music work together, all the different parts. So having this vocabulary-- quarter notes, eighth notes, upbeat, downbeat, stuff like that--is really going to come in handy when you're trying to communicate to others in the hopes of making music."
