"I’m Joe Marshall with expertvillage.com and today we’re going to learn about fans and spreads. Just want to take a moment to talk about the get ready setups and some finesse your own type of style. Cards fit differently in everyone’s hand, the placement of the cards as we explained is going to give you different types of fans, you’ll have to play around with that but as you get used to doing your fans you’ll be adding your own styles to it. For example if the classic thumb spread looks like that but you can add your own thing where it kind of looks like you’re doing a reverse but you’re also doing a regular one at the same time something like this…where your hand comes backwards as the fan goes the opposite direction, it’s like a finesse technique. Basically what you’ll do is you’ll just continue to spread with your thumb and you turn your hand at the same time, it’s almost like a complete opposite way to learn it so you want to make sure you do this at the end and practice like that cause it’s a lot easier once you have the placement of exactly where the cards are going to be lying in your hands before trying to learn reverse moves of the hand as you’re spreading and fanning your cards. Another thing about the placement it’s going to be different I said but you do want to make sure you have anchor points when you do start your spreads, for example the anchor point here is always going to be right here, this is important because when you have a fan you should be able to grab that point no matter how you grab it it should stay exactly the way it is, it’s not all your fingers and all of your hand supporting it. To do the spread it’s just the thumb alone, you’re adding the finesse it’s really just the middle finger and thumb you can let go with all the other fingers and you can even grab it with the other hand but that should be a crucial point in learning it, is where to apply the exact pressure. Too much pressure isn’t going to make a fan at all it’ll be choppy, a not enough pressure will just make them all fall out and if you don’t have the right pivot point and the right placement when you do it you’re going to run into some problems, so as a check just make sure you can release with all your fingers when you’re practicing and just hold it with a thumb and middle finger. It’s going to take a little finger muscles but it’s going to be a lot easier, as far as when you close when you practice the placement the anchor point that you’re actually holding that I just spoke about should be the point where it’s going to be closing. So for example my middle finger is going to be the pressure that closes this fan and since it’s laying my hand they’re all going to come down in the spot on my hand and having the anchor point with the middle finger you’re pulling down into the hand and all the cards will follow through."
