"Candid photographs are really a neat way to catch the real true essence of the person. I know myself I have a hard time smiling when somebody says smile at the camera. So, I like to try to catch people in their natural environment, either to get a natural expression or to show them doing what they do. An example of this, and it's kind of an untraditional portrait, because you can't really make out the face of the man. But the object I was going for was portraying the fact that he was a painter. I found this man in his garden, painting this large flower. And I felt that this portrait showed, not only the man and what he does, painting, but what he is painting at the same time. So, again, whether you're at a party just snapping some candid pictures as they come in and out of room, or you're out in the field and you find somebody doing something and you want capture a candid portrait of that, don't be afraid to take candid shots. And don't be afraid to take shots that might look stupid. You know, take a bunch of candid photos and maybe a few of them will look really neat. It's a little bit easier for people to look natural when it's a candid photograph. So experiment with less pictures of people all lined up in a row or smashing their heads together. Try and get people in their natural environment, doing what they do."
