"Hi this is Jeff Isbell on behalf of ExpertVillage.com. Today we’re going to look at some more picking patterns and this one is called inside out, it just happens to be the very first finger picking pattern I learned, but in the flow of these lessons, it belongs here. Let’s take a look at inside out. Now this pattern should eventually sound pretty familiar to you, this is very much like what a lot of people call Travis picking. We’ll just jump right into it here. The pattern is, we’re going to take these middle four strings right here, the second through fifth string, and if you take the two outside strings of this combination it’ll help you figure out where you are, the two and two. So in this pattern we’re going to do it this way, Thumb, second finger, thumb, first finger. Remember the thumb is going to play both of these and these two fingers are going to play these two strings, the second and the third. So, thumb, second finger, thumb, first finger, we’re playing an A minor chord by the way. Now eventually when you get good at this, it will sound like this. I can’t even imagine how many songs there are that use this. The other half of this is called the inside out pitch, where you pluck the outside two strings, thumb plus two, thumb. It’s outside, inside, outside, inside, outside. That’s used in songs like, I don’t know, like. So there you have it, that’s the inside out in the inside out pitch. "
