"JAMES MENY: Okay so let's talk a little bit about vibrato versus straight tone. Certain musics and certain styles sort of lend to either one. There's pluses and minuses to both of them obviously just because of preference a lot of people like a straight tone in particular in pop music. And remember my definition of pop music is anything that's not classical or opera. In classical and opera they hate straight tone and they always want vibrato with the exception of one genre of what we consider classical which should be choral music. A lot of choral directors like straight tone. The pluses and minuses of straight tone are, straight tone is very easy to do if most people in your choir are doing it. So you just got to get the other remaining people to stop making vibrato and you can do a straight tone. Basically what straight tone does is it creates a lot of tension along the chord length and pulling them very wide or pulling 'em very tight so that there's no chance of vibrato going on."
