"JAMES MENY: Okay. So now we're going to talk a little bit about vocal coaches versus technique coaches versus all the different kind of coaches that are out there. The way I think of voice and voice teachers is sort of like baseball or football. There are teachers that teach biddy league, little kids. And their job is to teach you everything you need to know in general about the game. When you get into high school football, you can still get that kind of coach, but usually they are looking for some skills that you picked up earlier in your life. You get to college, they're looking for even more fine-tuned skills. And obviously, at the NFL level or the pro baseball level, they're looking for you to have mastered most of those and they become really, really detail oriented. If you're training with a certified speech level singing teacher or someone who teaches mix voice, you're basically dealing with NFL coach type people. In other words, their main focus is on the apparatus that makes you phonate sound and balancing that out. In other words, 'causing the least amount of damage, carrying the least amount of baggage or weight on it so that you can freely sing anything you want. Then you would go to a style coach, depending on the kind of music you're looking for. Some of them encompass that skill, too. Usually, they'll refer you to somebody else. Like, if you're into country music, they're going to send you to a country coach. If you're into gospel music, they'll send you to that coach. Understand that a real technique, a really good technique, like mix voice or speech level singing, will allow you the ability to sing in any of those genres."
