"JAMES MENY: Breathing, honestly, in my years as a singer and as a teacher, seems to have caused more problems in great singers and destroyed more careers than anything else technique wise. It's, they might as well tell you that, "Hey, if you want a singing career, you gotta clench your left ass cheek really tight for the rest of your career." It is that stupid and unnecessary for most people. So I would really look carefully at this whole breathing thing. Because remember, the vocal chords' main function isn't to phonate. Its main function is a sphincter. And a sphincter closes off all our pressure inside of our body so that we can survive. And if that's the case and you're putting excess breathing on your vocal chords, yes, you will get a big sound, you'll end up with a wobble later on and you're going to cause some other problems that come along with it."
