Improvisational theatre is a form of theatre in which the actors use improvisational acting techniques to perform spontaneously. Actors typically use audience suggestions to guide the performance as they create dialogue, setting, and plot extemporaneously. Many improvisational actors also work as scripted actors, and "improv" techniques are often taught in standard acting classes. The basic skills of listening, clarity, confidence, and performing instinctively and spontaneously are considered important skills for actors to develop.
The best way to improve improvisational skills is by practicing, playing improv games, and learning through trial and error. In this free video series, an improv teacher will show you a number of games to play to practice your improv skills, from the alphabet and relay games to the secret word and freeze tag games. You'll also learn how to do a backwards improv scene, how to use props in improv, and how to do a tag team monologue. Improve your improv skills instantly with improv games!
"JAYNE ENTWISTLE: Hi. I'm Jayne Entwistle with expertvillage.com and I'm a professional improvisor. I have a comedy improv troupe in San Francisco, California, called bigcityimprov.com. We're one of the top improv troupes in the Bay area. I currently live in Los Angeles where I'm a voice over actress and an actress, and I strongly believe that improv is great skill for all performers to have. We've been teaching skills for building great improv scenes, and now we're actually going to be performing some of our favorite games, we sure hope you'll enjoy them. ANDREW STUBBLEFIELD: And I'm Andrew Stubblefield. I've been doing improv for about ten years. I, too, started my own award winning improv league in college called The BS Players. We have a chapter at Humboldt State University and we also have a chapter at Cal State, Monterey. Currently, I live in Los Angeles where I do perform improv, basically weekly at Comedy Sportz, the Los Angeles chapter. It's a worldwide company, and you can check out their web site at comedysportzla.com. Remember, the sports is spelled with a 'Z.'"
