Summary: Writing rap music can be difficult. Learn how to pick a good rap beat in this free video clip.
"Alright, now we're going to talk about picking a beat. The selection of the beat process is very important thing because, of course you know, the beat is what moves people and it's the first thing they're going to hear before they even hear you rapping. So you want to make sure you pick a beat that can move people. If I have a tip for any rapper trying to come up, don't just pick any beat because some say "I want to rap over this beat" and you are going to end up selling yourself short of the glory of what you're trying to get to. Your lyrics won't even get recognized because the beat is so wack. But at the same time, listen to this, you want to make sure you make the beat and the beat don't make you. So you're going to cast twenty-two there. Do you see what I'm saying? I've always said that I would rather take an okay beat and do something astronomical than take an astronomical beat and do something okay. I have selected a beat. I'm in a real kind of down and out mood today. Not really but I'm in the vibe to write something realistic, you know something to feed the streets with something soulful. So I picked a beat and I'm about to show you all how to rock the beat now and how to figure out things."

on 4/28/2009 I just want to say, I have watched all of your video's in this series. They have been incredibly valuable to me. I work with inner city youth and have developed a hip-hop group. These young men love and embrace hiphop music and I have incorporated writing rap music into my program. I stumbled upon these clips from google. Thank God for the internet. You have given some important lessons and tips, not only for pro's but for ametuers as well. THANK YOU!!!
