Summary: Learn how to tape the corners of a book for repair in this free video lesson on book binding.
"Hi! I'm Gary for Expert Village. Now let's go ahead and put some tape along the corners of the book and we will protect it from this wear and tear over here where we see the book cover is separating. This wear and tear is usually from putting it on and off the shelves or just banging around when putting it down but even if you were binding a book and you didn't see any wear or tear here, I would still go ahead and put a piece of tape of these corners to protect it. It also completes the whole look of the binding that when we have the black tape going down the side, we should also have the black tape on the corners. So for this we are going to use the thicker tape. What I am going to do is rip my tape. I'll rip my tape probably about 3 1/2 inches long. It is very important if you rip the tape too short what is going to happen is that the tape won't cover the entire corner. Longer piece of tape we'll put over and you can see it covers nicely the whole length of the book with even some extra room. Now when we open up the other side, we fold it down. We have enough sticky part of the tape that is still exposed to enable us to fold it in and have it stay. So we grab the top corner and we fold it out. We see that the whole side will open up then and we fold it down and here we get the most exposed part of the tape, the stickiest part of the tape when we fold it and this way it is guaranteed that it will hold and stay good. Again, we take the tip of the corner and we fold it in and that gives us a nice big range of exposed sticky tape. We fold it in again, holding it very hard and just folding in all the exposed sticky areas so that it doesn't stick to any pages or attract any book while the book is closed. Then we can go ahead and close the book and this would be an example of a corner that is now protected and also again, gives us a nice clean look. It is also recommended to do the back corners as well; all 4 corners should be done. "
