Summary: Learn how to drill a hole in the spine of a book in this free video lesson on book binding.
"Hi! I'm Gary for Expert Village. Now let me show you how to find the right location of where to drill the holes. We want to make sure again that the book is nice and even and that it is not like one of the sides coming over the top or the pages sticking out. You want to make sure that the pages are in all the way and that also the covers are even. This way we will be able to catch the right spot on the spine. We have already examined the book we see. This book has a nice space in between so I am not too concerned about putting it too close to the written words but again, I am going to try to put it as close back as possible. If I hit the spine over here which is really wear the hole should go in this little indentation or close to it, if I put it there will catch a nice meaty chunk of the pages and it will give me some nice strong support. That is what I am going to try to do, put the holes as close to this and this edge as possible and make sure that I can grab some of those pages. The book usually takes about 4 holes down the spine. Unless it is a really small book, you might want to use 3 but we usually put around 4 and that is usually enough to put the strength through and get enough support for the book. So let's go ahead and start the drilling. I pushed everything in, looks nice and even. I am going to make my first hole. This bit is a really thin bit so you have to make sure that you hold it nice and straight and don't move it around too much while the drill is inside. So I am going to put about an inch off the top. I'm going to put the first hole. I am going to try and get into that groove but I am going to push it over a little bit. Not put it in the groove or push it over to the inside of the book rather than pushing toward the outside of the book so it really resting on the outer edges of the groove and I get my drill nice and straight and start it slowly.
