Summary: Learn how to properly examine a book before repairing it in this free video lesson on book binding.
"Hi! I'm Gary for Expert Village. Now we are going to get started binding the book. We are going to take a look through the book and see what kind of repair acatually needs to be done. Keep in mind that the binding that we are going to be doing today is not only on books that is damaged and need repair. It could be a brand new book that you know you are going to be getting a lot of use out of it and you just want to make it strong and secure so the pages don't fall out and they last you a nice long time. So I am going to show you how to repair a book so let's get started. What we are going to do now is put some support tape, masking tape right along the seam of the book because we want to give it support that we saw earlier. When we drill the holes, this part of the book actually puts a lot of pressure on those holes and in order to give it just a little extra support so the string does not rip the cover of the book right off, we put some tape on it that kind of supports around the holes. Today we are going to bind this book. We see that this book has gotten a lot of use. We see that the spine is coming off and the cover of the book is actually separating from the pages. You see there is a big gap here and in this particular book, the pages haven't actually started falling out but that's probably the next thing that is going to happen is the pages are going to start coming out. So we are going to bind this book. The first thing we would do is we would open up and go through and see if any pages are separating and we see pretty much the pages are intact here. I am going to show you what you would do if you find any pages that are separating. We see in this book the pages are coming out. What I would do is I would take a piece of clear tape and would run down the length of the book and take a sharp lead and I would actually just put it down, try to get the pages as close as possible where they are naturally suppose to fall. I would just take this clear tape and I would put it right over the seam. What this will do is hold these pages in place and then as the book is closed, we want to do the binding; those pages will actually be included in the binding. So this particular book does not have that problem so we don't have to use the clear tape; we can skip that step. "
