"Hi! I'm Gary for Expert Village. We are also going to need a drill bit. This is like a regular drill bit but it is very thin. It is 1/16th of an inch and that will give us a nice clean hole and the thread that we chose is actually going to have to be doubled up because we go through twice through the spine of the book. This bit will give us enough room to thread the string in twice so it will give us a nice size hole. Then we are going to need some type of knife. I use this, a surgical knife, but you can get a Japanese knife just something with a nice thin sharp blade which you can cut the tape and the string. The black tape, if you are going to be searching for the black tape to buy, this is a vinyl cloth tape. It is not like a very shiny plastic electrical tape. The nice thing about it is also very easy to rip with your hand. You can actually hear it. It sounds like ripping a piece of fabric. I would say that is the sound of a cloth tape and that is what is going to hold the best for the books. The needle that we are going to be using is an upholstery needle. It is used to sew very thick and heavy fabrics. I use a 4 inch needle because a lot of the books that I buy are actually very thick so the needle has to go all the way through. If you go and look at book binding supplies, you can see that a 2 1/2 or 3 inch needle is also sufficient depending on what type of book you are going to be binding. I use a regular home drill and it fits this my bit very nicely even though it is very thin but it fits very nicely in there and it makes a nice quick clean hole. "
