How to Make a Macintosh Computer Sing

Video Preview

Summary: Besides being useful, easy to use and rather stylish, Apple Macintosh Computers have some fun little "Easter Eggs" spread through the Operating System. Here you'll learn how to make your Mac sing. These commands are used to add voice to software programs written for Macs and for the Mac Operating System built-in text-to-speech feature. But they're also fun to play with (thanks to Usemac.com).

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open Terminal. Terminal is in the "Utilities" directory under "Applications."

  2. Step 2

    Copy and paste the following:

say -v Bad "I will get you i will get you this time now I will get you and your tiny little dog"

Make sure there's nothing to the right of the end quote. Here's a breakdown of the command:

"say" is the command that tells Terminal to convert text to speech.
"-v" tells Terminal to output the speech to the speakers.
"Bad" is the voice to use.

  3. Step 3

Hit the "Enter" Key on the keyboard. Your Mac will sing a song using those words to a familiar tune.

  4. Step 4

Copy and paste this for a little tune using the tune to Pomp & Circumstance:

say -v Good "It is graduation come one and come all it is graduation heres your dihploma"

(The spelling of some of the words are altered so the voice in Mac OSX will be able to pronounce it correctly).

  5. Step 5

    Hit the "Enter" key.

  6. Step 6

Here are a few more for your enjoyment (again, spelling is altered in some for pronunciation):

osascript -e 'say "Playing with my mac is fun is fun i can make it sing like this like this and you can make yours sing like this if you had a mac too" using "Pipe Organ"'

osascript -e 'say "Ding dong ding dong ding dong ding dong" using "Bells"'

osascript -e 'say "Macs are really cool my friend cool my friend cool you know Macs are really cool dohnt you wish you had one tooday" using "Cellos"'

  7. Step 7

Have some fun! Come up with your own songs to these tunes. There are other voices you can use with the "osascript" commands, but the ones you've used so far have melodies. The rest are just voices.
