Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
Pour boiling water down the drain.
Pour boiling water down the drain.

Boil water in a kettle or pan. Pour this water down the drain of your clogged sink. If this does not remedy the problem, proceed to step two.

  2. Step 2
    Vinegar and baking soda reacting.
    Vinegar and baking soda reacting.

Remove all standing water from your sink. Create a mixture of 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup vinegar. Be careful, it will foam! Pour this down your drain and let it sit up to a half hour. Flush out with 1-2 kettles of boiling water. If this does not work, proceed to step three.

  3. Step 3
    Unscrew the stopper mechanism.
    Unscrew the stopper mechanism.

Look under your sink for the mechanism that operates the stopper. Unscrew this from the pipe. This will release the stopper. Pull the stopper up and remove any debris. Look into the drain. If there is debris that you can see in the pipe, create a hook on the end of a wire hanger and fish it out. Pour 1 cup of baking soda directly into the pipe. Get under the sink and screw the mechanism back on. Once the stopper is connected, pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain. Wait several minutes and flush with boiling water.

  4. Step 4

If this still does not unclog your sink, you have three more options before calling a plumber. One option is to leave the baking soda and vinegar mixture in the water in the sink until it clears itself- which could be overnight. Another option is to unscrew both ends of the trap (put a bowl underneath to catch the water) and remove any debris that is clogging it. Your third option is to plunge the sink (although I have read that this is discouraged).
