Video: Smooth Edges and Undercut

It is important to make sure that all your edges are smooth when making things out of clay. Learn how to smooth all the edges and under cut the base of a clay plant pot in this free video clip.

So, once you've got all the pieces put together the last couple things you're going to need to do. First of all, to smooth the corners and I just pinch and gently push. And, that way the glaze isn't going to peel away from those very sharp corners. You need to do this on the edges of all the slabs that you've cut. You really don't want to have sharp corners left over on the finished piece. So, do that around the top and then also around all four of these on the base and make sure they're nice and rounded on the edges. And, in addition to that you also want to give this pot an undercut. It will look a little bit nicer when it's finished. And, it will also make the glazing easier. So, I just take my needle tool and I hold it at an angle and just cut across the bottom. Now, sometimes this will come off and sometimes it will want to stick to the bat. Which, it's wanting to stick to the bat right now. Which, is fine. Because, as it dries they'll separate from each other anyways. It's not going to reattach. So, go around all four sides and just give it an undercut. I'll slide some of that away so that you can see what it does. It just gives an area where the pot has a slight overhang. And, it just looks nicer resting on the table. So, once you've smoothed all the edges and given all four sides an undercut you can let this piece set aside to dry. But, I'm also going to show you how to address the glazing of this project. Because, with these leaves that is very important.
