When making lidded items, it's very important to have calipers, not one pair, but two. Always. First, you take one pair of calipers and you push them out this way until they reach just about the edge of the top of your lid gallery. Not the bottom, because you want the lid to be wide enough that there won't be any gaps that show, and if your lid slides to the side, that it won't slide off of that lid gallery. You want to be pretty precise. Hold it directly over the center of the pot to make sure that you've got the widest diameter, and then once you've got that measurement, you lay these calipers down. You take your second pair of calipers and you line then up with the first pair. That way, when you throw your lid, because you want it to be the outside measurement on the lid, you can get that very easily.
