"On behalf of Expert Village, I'm Eric Williams and I am here to tell you about reading music. Now that we know the musical alphabet, we need to apply it to the actual staff on the board here. Okay the staff is a series of 5 lines with 4 spaces in between that we use to notate music. Now there are 2 main clefs that they usually use on the staff; one is called the treble clef and one is called the base clef. We will get to both of them eventually. Right now the treble clef is the one that we are looking at. What the treble clef means is that it starts what we are going to call g and it goes a hoop around like this and like that and has that look. This is one that most people learn to read first. The treble clef is also known as the g clef because it originates on the line g. What we need to do is if we see the treble clef in place on a 5 line staff, we need to memorize the names of the notes that are on that staff and they are e, g, e, d, f which are the lines and the spaces in between the lines are f, a, c, e. This is the same musical alphabet that we have been talking about up here only now we are seeing it on the music staff which is what we are all about. We are going to try and learn to read music on staff. So what you need to do is just simply memorize these lines and spaces which takes time. Some people get it rather quickly, some people just take longer but you need to dedicate yourself to learning this new language of music which involves knowing e, f, g, a, b, c, d, e, f. It is really simply 7 letters of the alphabet which we applied to the musical alphabet but then being able to memorize the symbol that these notes represent. There the lines and the spaces all have a letter that goes with them and represents the pitches that we hear and that is what music is all about. "
