" Hello I am Erica Lane and I am with Expert Village and I am talking about how to train the female voice. I am going to talk about breathing. Breathing is so, so important when you want to sing in especially for phrasing, which we are going to talk about in another section. When you are breathing make sure just like when I was talking about posture that everything is straight and that you have your spine straight now so that you have plenty of support for your air. I also want to suggest that you lie down on the floor and you put your hands on your stomach and breathe for about 30 seconds with your hands on your stomach, notice that your chest is not rising but that your stomach is rising then if you stand back up memorize the feeling you had whenever your stomach was rising and that is how you need to breathe. So if you catch yourself breathing like this, you are breathing incorrectly because your shoulders and your chest are moving but if you breathe and only your stomach is expanding like this and you are going to have train yourself to do it because it is not normal to breathe that way unless you train yourself. Then when you find yourself breathing and your stomach is filling up with air like a balloon and you make it as big as you possibly can and nothing appears moving then you are breathing correctly and you are ready to sing and you have more air support to hold out notes longer. on 8/2/2008 I've always been taught that breathing diaphragmatically is the most natural and normal way of breathing .. because this is how a sleeping baby breathes. It would seem breathing with shoulder movements would be the most unnatural (and not normal) way of breathing.. But,yes, lying down with hands on the belly is the best way to illustrate to students proper breathing.

on 8/2/2008 Erica says "stomach is filling up with air".. well, trust me, the stomach can never be filled up with air. The air goes into your lunges, there is no connection for the air to go into the stomach. The diaphragm is the muscle controlling the breathing. By relaxing the stomach, the diaphragm will have enough space in order to expand properly. That is why the stomach is expanding. It is not because air is filling up the stomach as she says in this video.
One more thing... all singers knows that you need to pull in your belly, in order to have proper support. However, that is something that Erica might mention in later videos.. I have not watched them yet.
