Alright we're going to teach you the basic steps of merengue. It's really, really easy. It's just like your walking. There is only two steps ok. The music has eight counts. We're going to start, it doesn't matter which foot you start on either, but for now we'll go ahead and start with our left foot. Usually the gentleman starts with the left and the lady starts with the right, and all we're going to do is step left, right, left, right, left, right, and that's it pretty simple ok. The key to making it look right is the hips ok. You don't want to try to force the hips by doing all this ok, it's not that. The hips happen naturally as a result of having one leg bent and the other one straight. So you see if you stand up and you just bend one knee and keep the other one straight your hip naturally goes out to the side, and switch it goes to the other side. So that's all you're doing here with your hips is switching it from side to side ok. So it kind of feels like you're climbing stairs. Let me show you from the back ok. When you're climbing stairs you step up, you put your foot on the stair and then you press your weight onto it. So you place your foot on the stair, step on. Let's press the foot and step on ok. So as we step on the left foot the hip goes to the right and vice versa. Left, right, left, right, left, right ok, and you may also notice that there's a small amount of upper body movement as well. It's just your ribcage moving with your feet ok. So as you step on your left foot your ribcage goes to the left. As you step on your right foot your ribcage goes to the right. Left, right, left, right, arms staying comfortably at waist level. We call this home base. Ok, keep your wrists straight and your palms facing down. Ladies don't do this that's not cute. Ok, like this, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right and that's it. The basic steps for merengue.
