"When you are dealing with children, you really need to consider how that children is going to react in the given situation. And one of the things that can really effect a child is whether or not this is the best time of day for them. Are they real rested? Have they just been fed? Now that can be a good thing or bad thing for example; if you just fed a newborn, they might be more likely to be spitting up and/or uncomfortable and have a colicky moment. But if you have a toddler, they might listen better or be able to concentrate more fully if they are just fed. Or if it is not nap time. A lot of times I tend to shoot a lot of toddlers and if it is nap time they will not sit still or look at the camera to save your life and you know photographing a tantrum might actually be a neat artistic choice, but it is usually not the look you are going for. So, when you are the newborn you might also consider that they really only have a couple of hour window. I mean newborns are typically only awake and alert and active for maybe thirty minutes or an hour before they either kind of on their way up or on their way down. But a toddler, they may only have a good time in the afternoon or in the morning. So if you are not shooting your own child, try to talk to the parent and try to figure out when is going to be the best time for them so that you get the best picture possible."
