Dynamics & Phrasing Techniques to Improve Drumming

" Hi! My name is Frank, and what we’re going to look at in this clip is how to add dynamics to your playing, but specifically in the phrasing of patterns of your playing. Let’s look at the rock pattern, without any dynamics in either the pattern that you’re playing or the fills going into the next phrase. Let’s take a listen; this is just plain jane rock playing…it’s pretty good, but it’s kind of boring. If only we can add some motion, some direction to our music; well that’s what the dynamics do. Dynamics is simply the volume level that you choose; and let’s change them while we play like this…now that may make sense to you, and you say well why wouldn’t I do that? You’ll be amazed if you go out to the club, if you go out to the shows, many drummers just play that same one level, one volume, one dynamic, and while that’s good and maybe the music needs that, I would encourage you to try to add musicality to your playing; instead of just playing patterns, make music."
