Video: Making a Martini Glass Stem

So now we're going to make the stem and it's going to be a little bit different from the other stem and that it's a little taller and a little thinner so that it looks more like a martini glass. Again center it push down with your fist to get that opening started. Go all the way down to the bat head and open it up just a little bit at the bottom. Push under with the right thumb so you get a nice big chunk you can pull on. And then pull that up. Pinch with your left hand then compress down with your right. Leave enough room that you can go back in with your fingers and get another pull out of that. Now I'm going to take my hands on the outside and collar this in. That is to just compress with both of my hands and pull up. That's going to give this part of the stem, it's going to make it a little thinner. Now this is where it's going to get tricky. Because the thinner the base is, the more likely it's going to want to torque, when you start to pull out the stem. So you have to be very gentle. Watch the stem. Do this by feel. Don't look here, look here while you're throwing, so you don't accidentally topple it. So now I'm going to take my curved rib again, and I'm going to really push that in. And I'm doing it very gradually. If you try to do it too fast you'll create a massive amount of torque, and you'll rip your stem right off the bat. I'm going to do that one more time so that we get a really thin stem base. And I can see I'm starting to get just a little bit of torque. One of the greatest rules of clay, quit while you're ahead. So I'm just going to smooth it. And I'll do the rest of the thinning whenever I trim this tomorrow.
