"Next to this painting, you can see another very popular Renaissance genre, portraiture. This is a portrait by Raphael Sanzio as well. We don't actually know who this young man is, but we know that he is a young man, that he knows that he must have lived in the early 16th century. We can see this from the way he is dressed. This is the contemporary fashion of the day. This young man has got beautiful face, thinking about something, meditating on something, and we can in the background landscape. But the landscape and the figure itself are not closely related to one another. It's more important on the portrait to see the character, the man himself, to show the man. As a typical Renaissance painting, the background, Italian Renaissance painting I'm talking about. The background is just an additional aspect of the portrait in which the person itself is more important than the background."
