"DJ Trails with hiphopelements.com, back to DJ basics. We are going to go over the use of the needles and the headphones. Right here on our turntable this is our cartridge, these are Shure M447’s which are pretty much standard for hip-hop DJing. They work really well for scratching and have a great base response. This is the cartridge; this comes off and this is actual stylist. If the needle breaks you can replace it. For those who do not know, these needles are pretty much made for scratching so they can be used for a while, eventually the sound quality degrades and you need to replace them every few months or so or a year or so, it depends how heavy handed you are and how picky you are with the quality of your sound. But it basically screws into the tonearm over here; you lift it up, put on the record and quality of sound. That is the basics of needles. The headphones obviously are what we use like we discussed in part 2 mixer basics to cue the mix. So everybody else can’t hear what we are doing until we are ready. Plugs into the front of both mixers. We have our controls right here, a cue one side and that’s it. "
