Video: Drum Stick Wrap Tips

Drum stick wraps are a good way to make sure the drum sticks don't fly out of your hands. Learn exactly how to put them on and why they work in this free video clip from an expert drummer.

In this clip I'm going to discuss the usage of stick wrap, why we use it and actually how to wrap a stick. The reason that you want to use stick wrap, it's just like a baseball player. You don't want that stick to slip out of your hand while you're playing. So there's several different kind of stick wraps on the market. If you're a cheapskate like I am, you can actually use tennis racket wrap which I use quite often. But here we have an actual drum stick company that we bought here. They usually come with this plastic protection on it. And they also have these little sticky deals on the end here. So you want to first remove that. You want to start at the butt end of the stick. You stick that on there, and then you slowly roll the stick and pull on the actual wrap itself. And once you get started there's actually a little groove, you'll see as you get it going how it just lines itself up. And I'm keeping the whole time either this hand or this hand, I'm keeping a grip on it so the stick wrap doesn't unravel on me. And you slowly make your way down the stick, spinning it and gripping it as you go. And you can see the grooves, if you can see how evenly spaced those are. That makes it nice. You don't want to try to go up on it like this and overlap what you've already put on there. So let me back up here a little bit. Okay? And then just continue going down the length of the stick. And now you can also, this is actually going down farther on the stick than I would go. Because I do a lot of rim shot stuff, and when you're doing rim shot stuff it will tend to chew the tape up and the grip. And then the grip will actually unravel. So what you could do, you could stop short like I would probably stop about here. I would take some scissors and cut that off. But we'll just show you here just to get this done for us. And there's actually another tab here. And then that actually goes like that. Then they actually provide you with more tape to make sure that sucker doesn't come off while you're jamming. That wraps on there like that. And these are also reusable. You can, if you don't rim shot them up too bad where you mess them up, you can unravel this and put it on a new stick when you're done. But like I said, it's cool for grip, looks cool and when you throw them out in the crowd after a show the kids get a cool stick with stick wrap on it. And that's how you wrap a stick.
