"Hi. This is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village and I'm here to talk to you about promoting your rock show online. Now, there are many different places where you can promote an event online, but the best place is probably MySpace, because that's a place where people from all over the world are interconnected, constantly checking bulletins and finding out what's going on. So that's a great place to start. Your band should have a MySpace spot, and you can post on your blog, you can put up bulletins, put something in your actual description so when people go to your page they can see a show that's coming up. But there are other sites besides MySpace which you might want to check out. For example, Craigslist is one. Put something in the musician?s classifieds section. People who are into the music scene will check it out and may be more likely to check out your band than the average person. Another thing you can do, of course, is use your mailing list, and contact people that way. Although, that's not the best way because people tend to get annoyed by too much mail and they may not read it. And, of course, there are lots of local, social networks. Just about every major city has some sort of musicians' network, where people have blogs about upcoming events. So you can get involved with these. That's a great way to start. Also, lots of local, new music magazines are now online. And they have online forums where people talk about upcoming events. So it's good to start networking online and promoting your band that way. That kind of viral promotion is much better than stuff where people don't really know who you are and have no sense of you being part of their community. The most important thing to remember is that people are interested in stuff that feels connected to them. So if you're doing promotional work online, you want to communicate with people in a way that feels like you're part of a community. So become part of message boards, become part of someone else's network so that when you're promoting your show, you're promoting it to someone that feels like they already know you, not someone who's saying "Who's contacting me?""
