"Now as you're budgeting your studio recording, you want to think about what you can record at home. Now what you can record at home depends on several factors. The first thing is what equipment you have. If you have good professional recording equipment, then you can probably do a lot of overdubs at home. This includes guitars, both electric and acoustic, it can be vocals, and direct input items like keyboards. However, you also want to think about the actual space you have at home. If you live in a crowded apartment building with lots of noise, or you're in a city where there's lots of noise coming from the street, you want to think about the limitations you're going to have to deal with. For example, you're not going to be able to record vocals in a building that's noisy, especially if there's something like automated heat, where at random times you're going to hear the banging of pipes. You can't record in that kind of situation. Of course you could always find a friend's house and that solves the problem. What I did is discovered that there are certain rooms in my apartment that are quieter than others and in my closet, for example, I have been able to set up an isolation area for recording vocals. Now if you don't have really good professional recording equipment, there are still certain things you can record at home. A lot of electronic items like keyboard can be done at home. The only thing you need then is to make sure that you have good direct cabling, and also you want to be sure that you have good software. If you don't have the appropriate software for doing a recording, it isn't worth trying to fake it at home. So for the bare essentials at least you need a good computer with a good recording program, and enough dead space in the house that you're not going to be recording everything else that's going on."
