How to Write Songs with a New Band

"This is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village and I'm here to talk to you about writing songs with your new band. Now unless you are in a covered band, you are going to be writing new songs right off the bat with your band. This can be the moment where you discover just how well you all work together. The best thing to do when you are writing new songs is to be very open minded and try new approaches. Listen to your bandmates suggestions, let everybody bring their own ideas into the mix and see what develops. If you are a principle song writer, bring your songs to everybody but welcome their criticism with the same openness that you would want them to receive your criticism. If you get criticism that seems stupid, that may be a sign that you are either impatient, like I often am or that you pick someone who doesn't really belong in your band. You should be at a point where everybody's opinion is respected, not just on principle but also because there are people whose ideas really are worth respecting. Never let yourself get to the point when you are writing songs where you feel like you are going through an assembly line with your song. Always try new ideas, listen to peoples suggestions and try new approaches. One approach you can do when you are writing new songs is to take songs that come from two different people and try to fuse them together and that is a way of letting both peoples ideas come into play and you get a unique sound. Writing songs with your band should be one of the most exciting things that you do. And the way to ensure that it is a good experience for everyone is to be open minded and be adventuress. "
