The E string is the most sensitive of all, and I'm not able to give you a precise explanation of why, but most violins, even the most traditionally setup violins have a fine tuner for the E string, and in fact that tuner has acquired the name of an E tuner, even when it is use on other strings. The fine tuner merely puts the tuning process into a lower gear. It's like shifting down to take a bicycle up a steep hill. And the pitch changes very rapidly when the string is tuned with the pegs. The pitch changes much more gradually, and with much more opportunity for control when its tuned with the fine tuners, which are threaded, they are like fancy little screws with levers underneath the tail piece."
