"Hi I'm David Kaynor for expertvillage.com. I'm talking about violin strings. The question inevitably comes up: where do you get them? My opinion is that it is best to support your local violin shops, and so I am in favor to buying strings from a shop whenever possible. That said, there are catalogs and online sources of strings, and in some cases, arguably there are some savings. But strings and almost all other violin accessories and parts can be either purchased directly or special ordered through a violin shop, or a string shop, or in many cases a general musical instrument shop. I think shops that specialize in string instruments and bowed instruments and in the violin family are probably the most, probably the best choices. But that is where I would go to replace strings—violin shop first then catalogs and online."
