"Hi! I’m David Kaynor for expertvillage.com. Whereas the Dessemble fiddle that I’ve been using is presumably from France. Now the pegs I’m going to insert a peg ebony finely carved, there’s I don’t know if this is going to be visible in the camera here, but there’s a very small hole through the peg and the end of the string passes through that hole, and then the string is wrapped around the peg as it turns, every peg in a violin has that little hole. So the peg is inserted and if it’s well fitted it turns smoothly. This is only moderately fitted; I would say this would benefit from a fitting, it’s also possible to lubricate pegs and sometimes fiddlers would use a little bit of pencil lead which acts like graphite and can enable to turn a little more freely. There are some commercially available peg lubricating compounds and it’s arguable that they reduce the wear between the ebony of the peg or whatever the peg is made of and the maple of the peg box. Now I can put the other pegs in…there’s two and then we have a peg box with all four pegs installed in it."
