"Hi! I’m David Kaynor for expertvillage.com. I’m going to talk for a few minutes about the use of the fine tuner in tuning a violin. Fine tuners are essentially little threaded shaft with a large area on top which can be relatively easily gripped and turned. Underneath the fine tuner there’s a lever, I regret that I don’t have one that I can actually take apart to demonstrate, but the threaded shaft presses down on or releases pressure on the lever which is to which the string is attached and then I can demonstrate. Here’s a string that is roughly in tune that if I turn the fine tuner counter clockwise the string loosens, the pitch drops and the string is now lower than it needs to be to be in tune, it’s down in F-sharp instead of a G. Now to tune using the fine tuner I can gradually turn the tuner, my ear tells me that these strings are pretty close to in tune, at which point I would finish the tuning process using my bow."
