"Hi! I’m David Kaynor for expertvillage.com. So corner blocks… there are four and then the end block, which is like the corner blocks curved, generally from spruce I believe with the grain running vertical, it’s then resistant to deforming along it’s grain and it becomes really stable as another block up at the neck as in the neck block and that creates both glue surfaces for the top and back, but also creates an area where a mortise can be carved so that the neck can fit in almost like a dove tail joint, the added material of the block makes that possible. And at least in theory I believe it’s desirable for the blocks to be big enough to add the necessary amount of strength, but not so big that they add an ordinary amount of weight. And that’s a brief glance at the ribs of a violin."
