" Hi! I’m David Kaynor for expertvillage.com, and I am exploring how to generate a note with quality of tone on the fiddle. It’s quite possible to just scratch and it’s possible to get kind of a silky tone, but the real joy in the fiddle comes from range of expression. And the components of tone generation are the weight of the hand on the bow, which means the weight of the hand translated, transmitted to the strings, the speed of the bow, the intensity with which the bow strikes the string at the start of the note, whether it’s very gentle or very rough, and then maintaining a reasonably perpendicular relationship between the bow and the string is a part of it, and so is the location of the contact point between the bow and the strings. My own contact point wanders around quiet a bit over the course of the tune, and it’s been a life long struggle trying to get some control over that and have it be consistent and where I want it, but I’m going to try to have a fairly varied intensity in the strings as I play this little bit of melody."
