When we're dealing with the fretboard itself, we'll have to use different kind of files. A good flat file, of various lengths, will be very good in order to make sure that our frets are good and level. And this is a cheap sanding block that's long so that we can sand across multiple frets all at the same time so that they work level. This is just a piece of metal that's got an absolutely flat bottom edge upon which you can glue or hold a piece of sandpaper, and that works very well for doing some kind of sanding. And then when we get into dealing with the frets themselves, there's almost no way around needing a good fret crowning file. And you can notice that this fret crowning file has a shape like this that matches the top of the frets and this is just to give the frets a nice round, smooth surface so that the string, when it is pressed, only sits on the very crown of that fret, the very top edge. We don't want that fret to be flat, because that will create a buzz.
