"Okay, now we've refined the face a little bit. We've done a little smoothing; we've got our hairline defined, let's go ahead and start carving the hair. Hair can be represented in clumps as opposed to single strands and so lets go ahead and establish some clumpiness to the hair, first, and the way I'm going to approach this is I'm going to soften it first using my heat source. In this case a high tech candle. Just soften it up a little bit so that I don't have to work so hard in carving. And then grab one of my tools and using my sketch to draw from, I will start refining general shapes of the hair moving across. Now, one of the things that's important is let's look at the way that hair itself grows before we finish carving. So, grab a piece of paper and I'll show you the pattern in which hair grows on the human head. If this is the basic shape of the head, hair grows up, basically, and gravity pulls it down. From the side, it tends to flop, depending upon our curve, it follows the shape of the head here and then it curves down. From the temples it grows this way. So we're going to follow that same basic pattern when we carve it."
