In this clip, we'll be doing, in my opinion, one of the hardest things about a woman's face in the cartoon world, the lips. I don't know why, but for some reason it takes a lot of time and practice to get them looking just the way you want to in your head. It's pretty easy to visualize the other stuff like the nose, the eyes, and the eyebrows. The lips, you might think you have them down in your mind, but you'll find that more often than not, it doesn't end up translating onto the page when you finally start drawing them in. Let's go to our practice page. We'll start testing them out on these girls. I found that the best way to do the lips is just to dive in with both feet. You want to make sure first of all you're not too far away from the nose. The lower it is, the weirder she'll end up looking, so you're just going to give a quick swoop like that. That doesn't look like much right now, but that will be the upper lip. Once you take that, you go down and give her just a prominent bottom lip. That rounds out the look and then you just kind of color in the top part, and then you have lips. You see what I mean? This is not easy at all to land the perfect lips. That looks like a pretty decent look for this. If we were to go over here. Let's say we were to do her lips just a little bit too small. All of a sudden now, it's kind of sticking with the character that we have going here because she has a tiny little nose and a tiny little perched lips. She's going to end up looking kind of odd, petite, and small looking. That could have just been a mistake. We might have just done the lips a little bit too small. Moving over here, we'll do the lips a little bit too big. If you were to give her a too big prominent upper lip, all of a sudden you're locked into doing pretty big lips here. You have to get the corners of the mouth and then going for the lower lip. It's not huge, but it might not be what you had in mind to begin with. Again, for the purpose of these tests and sticking kind of with the character we villain have going here, it's not exactly what we had in mind. Moving over to our woman here. Sometimes you won't even want to give them actually lip definition. Instead, if you want to keep the character on a homelier side, you just kind of give her a lower lip and that's all. No upper lip. It makes her look a little bit more homely. Again, if you want to go for a more standard look, you're just going to have to dive in with both feet and do a quick little swoop along the top. Kind of a squiggly line there and give her a lower lip. Just like that. Kind of let the lips evolve from there. Maybe widen them up a bit and give them a bit more definition up at the top. If you're going to do a black and white drawing, it's best to color them in at the top and not at the bottom. For some reason, it makes them look a little bit more real. There you go. They're not too big. They're not too distracting. They're the perfect size for her face. You want her eyes to be the things that pop out the most in this drawing, so there you go. Lips are done.
