Watercolor is a type of painting that uses colored pigments dissolved in water. The distinguishing characteristic of watercolor painting is its transparency. The surface of the paper is visible through the thin watercolor pigments, creating an effect different from thicker textures as found in oil painting. Although this is a relatively modern technique, various related types of water-based paints have been used throughout recorded history. The painted papyrus scrolls of ancient Egypt may be considered the first watercolors, and the ink techniques of early Asian art are early forms of monochrome, or single-color, watercolor.

"We're going to take our splatter shield. And the way you make this, is you just get a piece of paper, fold it over and you just start pulling out randomly to make a hole, that's basically an inch and a half about an inch and a half. And you put this over your painting. And sometimes you want to do this when you've got wet areas under it and sometimes you want to do it when you've got dry areas under it. This increases the interest in the painting and we're going to, we're going to work yellow ocher. We're going to splatter that first. Every three or four times, you want to rotate or move your splatter shield. Now this is not my normal splatter shield. My normal splatter shield is plastic so it doesn't wear out. This eventually will ruin."
