"Hi. My name is Cody Kimmel. I'm the lead singer of the band Eliot Fitzgerald and I'm here with Expert Village to teach you how to write an alternative pop song. The next thing you need, and this is something that a lot of people don't remember, but they need their memories. Third tool to good songwriting is a good memory. You've got to be able to remember your surroundings, remember the world around you, remember the stories that you've heard, remember the feelings that you felt at a certain time. Because all of that is going to be important when it comes time to actually put them into words and put them into song. And the fifth step you need is a good background in the music that you're wanting to write for. Let's say you're a just a beginning songwriter that's really out to even start songwriting for money. It's good to research what it is that you're going to be writing for. If, for example, it's going to be alternative pop, go out and buy a bunch of albums. Get a good mix of different albums and start listening to them. It's not for the sake of stealing music, you don't want to steal music and ideas from other artists, but at the same time you do want to use other artists within that genre to maybe come up with some ideas and get some inspiration. So those are the tools to good songwriting."
