" Hi! My name is Connie Hale. Thanks for joining me here at expertvillage.com. We’re going over some basic tap steps today. We’ll do something that’s a little more intermediate, but beginners can pick this up as well. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of the term falling off the log, but this is what it’s supposed to look like. It’s a very simple step, but it’s very effective because it looks pretty cool doing it. Alright, falling off the log is simple. Brushing your foot back and hitting it on your toe. Again, it’s sliding the foot back and catching it on the toe. Sliding it back, catching it, and catching it. Obviously, we’re changing feet with this one, so we slide back, touch, we jump to it, touch, touch. It’s a lot like just sliding your feet across the floor, but getting that final tapping sound at the end. So, facing front looks like this. Again, side. Alright, face this side for you, falling of the log. Slide it, slide it, slide it. Now, if you notice my arms, I’m doing opposite arm with opposite leg. My right foot goes back, my left arm comes front, then I switch them. Falling off the log. So, going fast up to tempo. Notice, how I’m leaning forward to keep my balance. And that is falling off the log. "

on 5/9/2009 The step shown in this video is NOT falling off a log. Falling off a log is made up of 4 springs - the first two are with the legs extended, the third is crossed over with a leg bent behind, and the fourth is a return to to the first position. The step is said to imitate the lumberjacks springing from tree to tree as they float down the river. Step in detail: Face right diagonal front with right leg extended in front, just off the floor, spring onto the right foot with left foot extended to right diagonal front corner, spring onto right foot, crossing over to face left diagonal front with left leg bent behind, spring back onto left foot, extending foot to right diagonal front corner as at the beginning. It can also be done with 3 springs and a hop. Hop first, do the spring onto the right, left and crossing onto the right, then start again by hopping on right with left leg to left diagonal front corner. I've been teaching tap for over 32 years, and have come across Falling off a log done this way from many workshops I've attended. There is even a cartoon of Bugs Bunny "falling off a log", literally.
