"In this clip we're going to talk about what is a raga. If you're not familiar with a raga, this is one of the harder things to understand and puzzled me a great deal, when I started studying Indian music. You could define a raga as being kind of a combination of a scale and a musical composition. A raga is a scale. It's a pattern for ascending, a pattern for descending. It may be the same series, seven notes up, seven notes down or it might be pentatonic going up, seven notes going down. It has a heart, a little melody that occurs over and over, that doesn't belong to any other raga and it has a king note and a minister note, which is usually notes where you end up a lot or you, which are very prominent, in the rod. This rod, for example, is a rod."
