I don't think this is always true, and I think it depends on the ability of the artist. A talented artist can take a simple story about a kid entering a chess tournament and winning into an exciting hit comic book if they can control the eye well enough and create an appealing or engaging look, on top of a talented script from a writer. I just don't think it matters what your comic is about, but how you go about presenting it.

My name is Dan Head. And today, we're going to talk about how to self publish your own comic or graphic novel. When we talk about what kind of stories make good comic stories, a story that makes a good story for comics is a story that is visually explosive. It's a story that has, in a movie, giant special effects. Remember you don't have a special effects budget, so anything that you can imagine, anything that your artist can draw, that's what can go into your comic. It's not like writing a play where it's about the dialog, and it's about the characters. And, it's not like writing a book where it's about writing what the characters feel. It's about what we see. If you want to draw, if you want to draw or write about giant planet eating dragons, that is totally okay in comics. That's why we had to wait until we had this wonderful CGI to make movies out of comics because the truth is as visual storytellers, we could do anything, but as comic write, as movies had to catch up.
