"Okay, we have six notes now. I think we're ready for our first melody. We can play "Mary Had a Little Lamb". You might have heard this one; it's a nursery rhyme from long ago. We can start on our open E string. E, then the D on the B string "D", the C on the B string "C", back to D, E, E, E. Now, if these were written these would be quarter notes right here. They'd be notes with stems. So, E, D (they'd be filled in) C, D, E, E, E. This last E would be held for two beats. E, E, E. So, E, D, C, D, E, E,E. Hold it. D, D, D, hold the D. Then E and now G on the high string. Be sure that you go to the high E. E, G, G. EDCD, just like the beginning EEEE (Four E's that time). D, D, E, D, C. So, one more time for you. E,D,C,D,E, E,E D, D, D, E,G,G (humming along, etc.) End on the C."
