"Good day. I'm Dr. Charles Grimes, and I'm speaking today on behalf of Expert Village about finding a theatrical monologue for use in auditions. I'd like to tell you a little bit about knowing the reality of the audition process. You'll be working artistically to get your monologue together, and that's all wonderful, but you'll be going into a business environment and a business situation. If you've been an actor long enough, people have told you it's show business, it's not show art. It's a depressing but very true cliche. You have go to in there knowing that you need to present yourself as a responsible, competent, professional person. The director is there to make choices that are defensible and reasonable. He or she doesn't want to take a chance on someone who appears flaky, on someone they don't know, on someone who gives a vibe that says I'm different than you, I'm better than you. When you're in the audition process, think about behaving in a way that says I'm one of you, I'm here to work for you, I will enjoy the experience and I'm perfectly capable of being responsible throughout the entire six or eight week rehearsal. Whatever it is that you're going out for, you need to show that you are absolutely responsible. The director is out there looking for that, looking to cast people who will be good to get along with."
