on 11/19/2008 After hosting karaoke for 13 years, and making a very good living doing it, I must say I strongly disagree with this video.
Backround music is essential for numerous different reasons. Aside from keeping the crowd going and in most cases putting them in a dancing mood, it sure beats the dreaded "Dead Air". Even if you are the best MC on the planet, talking with nothing in the backround sounds like dead air.
Backround music is also used as a Rest or volume reduction tool. If everything happens to slowly start getting louder you use the backround music as a tool to 'Re-adjust' everyone's ear levels for the room. Any experienced host knows that "ear bleed" is a common problem.
I'm not trying to say you are wrong. Only that after all these years, and packing bars to capacity for years I find this tip totally ridiculous. Who wants to sit in a soundless bar? That's why places like this have house sound systems. I can't even begin to count the times that the backround music has not only encouraged people to dance with the people "Singing" dancing songs, but got people in the mood to sing themselves.

"Were back with expert village . Another great tip for running a great karaoke show, in-between the singer don't put on canned filler music it really reduces the live energy. Instead make announcements as demonstrated by Mary Frances. Thank you everybody I'm glad your having a good time tonight. Welcome to the Crest, we have karaoke every Monday and from 9:30 to 1:30 and in just a minute were going to get our next singer up. And that is how you lead announcements, so the bar gets a plug and the energy keeps flowing."
