"So when is the tambura played? So you want to take into consideration mood when you're playing the tambura. And actually, there's a tradition already set up for you that will guide you in the mood for your playing. The Indian music is, comes from that very traditional, sacred music and it is an expression of the times of the day. You have morning music, afternoon music and evening music. And, in Indian music terms, these are called ragas. A raga may be a series of notes that make up a particular scale that are the framework, the structure for a particular piece of music. Now, for the purpose of demonstration, we may not stay within those time frames, but we want to demonstrate a little bit about how the tambura is played along with other instruments. And you would play the tambura in accompaniment with a harmonium and a drum or some other instruments like the sitar, and it provides the background for that music."
