Okay, so we're going to start laying down the basic layout of the feather and how I go about doing it. I'm going to start off by doing a bobcat. Like I said, I have my own design already, a feather. A photograph of it and a reference shot of another bobcat. I'm going to take a water tip brush, one that holds a little bit more paint. Wet the tip of the brush and start mixing basically a background color. This color that I mix together will be closest to the overall shadow of the piece. You want to go through and find out the overall color or shadow would be. This is just a very almost like a skin tone that I'm using. I get lots of paint on the brush. What's really important about this stage is that you don't use a lot of water, or if there's excess water on your brush, you want to make sure that that's off first. Again, because this is a feather that has an oil base, the water will kind of soak in in between the little feather quills. We're just going to lay in the design. With this stage, you can be really loose and really simple because you're just laying down the back drop first. You can use lots of paint. The more paint, the thicker base you'll have and the less you'll have to worry about the delicacy of the feather if you use a lot of paint. If it's easier for you to lay down the beginning stage by using a gesso or something a little bit more solid as a base, that's fine too. That's actually how I started doing the feather was with the gesso down first and then painting overtop of that. Over the years, I've kind of just went into painting it directly on the feather without a gesso. That will just come with time the more you practice doing it.
