on 8/2/2008 I love this idea on how to make a dress for cheap too! I will definitely be getting my sewing kit out. You are never too old to learn something new. And this is what i've longed to learn. At 33, I am now learning how to irish dance thanks to her video.

"The Irish dancing costume is a very important part of the dance too. You usually wear a velvet dress which comes to your knee. This is mine. Than you have a green sash, as you can see in the picture, that falls from left shoulder to right hip, or the other way if you really want. The capes are usually attached with Celtic brooches at the shoulder and at the hip and than we wear pumps on our feet with usually black tights or white pomp socks. The hair is usually worn down and sometimes in ringlets. If you don't have the money to purchase an Irish dancing dress of your own you can make one for cheap. This dress, I picked up this cheap dress on Melrose Avenue and I found this green material in a second hand thrift shop. I think it was a banner of some sort. So I cut it into a triangle, as you can see. Attached some gold Christmas ribbon to the side and pinned it to the shoulder to the left and the hip to the right side. The sash would be worn over your shoulder like this and down at the hip. One the back the cape will move when you dance. It's important to have a dress that has a lot of skirt room or flexibility so you can lift your leg high in the kicks. This dress I've worn many times now in L.A. and with these black tights and with the Irish dancing pumps. You can also wear ballet pumps or just your socks if your a beginner and once you progress in your dancing you'll start learning Irish Tap and that's where you wear heavy shoes and the soles usually have a covering of wood, fiber glass, and metal and they make a lot of noise.""
