Video: Bad Fix Prints in the Darkroom

Pay attention to your fixers when developing film to keep from getting bad fix. Learn to avoid bad fix when developing photographic prints in a darkroom in this free photography video.

What I have here is an example of a contact sheet that was not fixed properly. And I mean I like to teach through good examples, but this is actually an example that's a bad example that's great to teach through. And you can see this print, it has some brown staining on it, and we only made this contact sheet a little while ago, and it already is oxidizing and turning this color. Now this is something that you don't ever want to have happen, and one way to not have this happen to you is, again, to use the little bottle of Hypo Check that I had talked about when I was testing the fixer. I don't really know how this print got into bad fix, but my guess is that the fixer probably went bad while they were printing. So it's really important to keep checking your fixer and making sure that it's good, it's not exhausted. Once your print sort of gets this way, there's really not much you can do about it, it's really unfortunate. You can't go back in time or fix it, so you really do want to pay attention to your chemistry and make sure that it's working fine and that it's fresh.
